June '13 Favourites

I love working out what products I have been using and enjoying the most over the last month. A couple of my June favourites have already had their own individual blog posts but there are a couple I haven't mentioned yet. So here are my favourites for June.....

Foundation - Nars Sheer Glow in Mont Blanc

I did my research on this foundation before I purchased it. I watched a lot of YouTube videos and read lots of blog reviews, because when a foundation costs £34 and you can't get a sample you do want to be pretty sure that you're going to like it. Based on the reviews it sounded like exactly what I was looking for, a high-end foundation (my first) which gives a nice luminous look but without being too dewy, with medium to full coverage and a good colour match of course. Although it is called Sheer Glow this foundation actually has surprisingly good coverage, I'd say it was medium but also quite buildable and yet still sheer enough to look natural and let my freckles peek through when applied thinly.

The Bright Red Lip

I am reasonably new to lipstick, I never really bothered with lip products in the past, not even lip gloss on a night out as I am just far too lazy and lip products can be quite high-maintenance. But now looking back at photos I can see that I sometimes looked a little bare and in some cases a little dead.

So I have started changing this habit and have been wearing subtle and nude lipsticks to work everyday and when I am out and about. I have really enjoyed doing so and feel it has made quite a difference to my overall makeup look so I thought it was time to be a bit more daring.

L'oreal Preference Wild Ombre Kit

Photo from
Apart from a couple of slightly shorter hair styles and a brief experimentation with semi-permanent hair dye, my hair has always been the same. Since I was a child I have pretty much had long straight brown hair, and that's it.

I have always been put off dying my hair because of the amount of maintenance involved. The idea of having to re-do my roots every few weeks seemed like a nightmare. Especially since my hair grows at at break-neck speed.

I knew after the wedding I wanted a bit of a change and then I fell in love with the Ombre look. I know that it is really popular now and a lot of girls/women have it but I just think it looks so pretty! Especially at this time of year as it looks almost sun-kissed. The only problem was the cost. With a very recent wedding and honeymoon and the new aim of saving for a deposit for a house I couldn't afford to visit a salon. So instead I took a massive risk and bought the at-home L'oreal Preference Wild Ombre Kit No.2.

With an old towel around my shoulders, my hair clipped it to birds nest sections and a bleaching kit carefully balanced on my sink, I prayed that it would turn out alright. The kit itself is really easy to use, once the different components are all mixed together you simply squirt it on to the handy brush and apply it to the ends of your hair, avoiding the roots of course as that's the look we are going for.

Aussie - My Haircare Routine

For someone with ridiculously long hair (I mean seriously ridiculous - someone please make me go to the hairdressers!) I really don't do much to it. I can never be bothered to style it and luckily it is quite naturally straight, hopefully to the point where I can get away with just leaving it (because that is exactly what I do).

I am however, concious of keeping it nicely conditioned. I have had the same hair routine for years and didn't realise how many products I actually use because it has just become habit. I really love the Aussie haircare range. It is reasonably priced, easy to get hold of, smells lovely and seems to do a good job.

Nicky Clarke Straighten and Curl Styling Tool

I can't remember when I first started straightening my hair, I must have been about 17. As someone with naturally fairly straight hair they have never been something I use on a very regular basis. I tend to use them more for curling than straightening these days. I have only ever owned one pair of straighteners, The Morphy Richards Mark Hill 22020 Straighteners and they have served me well.

A month or so before the wedding my sister and I were having a makeup and hair trial day when my straighteners decided to up and die on us. They kept flicking on and off, we tried taping the wire in the right place which worked as long as it didn't move. Have you ever tried curling your hair with hair straighteners when you can't move them? Not easy. It was a lost cause.

Foundation Primers - The Mission

I am currently on a mission to find the perfect primer, something which is turning out to be a little tricky, in large part due to my lack of mission funding. I haven't yet found the perfect primer but I will not rest until I do! (Too dramatic?!) In the meantime I thought I would share my findings so far.

I have currently tried four primers, two high-street (drugstore) and two high-end...

Dainty Doll Hippy Shake Blusher - Highlighter for Pale Skin

I have had a pretty good experience with Dainty Doll by Nicola Roberts makeup so far (see previous post here). The range is made for pale and fair skin tones so I know that I can pretty much count on their shades to complement my pale complexion.

As I am trying to get a little more in to powder blushers I thought I would order a couple of the Dainty Doll ones, especially since they were only £1.99 on the Fragrance Direct website (possibly because Dainty Doll is being/has been discontinued - or so I have read).

Happy Feet

Dry and scaley feet are not a good look for summer! In winter you are fortunate enough to not have to worry about ugly feet, you don't need to pamper those toes and keep up with regular pedicures, you can just wrap your feet up in some warm fluffy socks and nobody knows what is hiding inside.

In summer out come the flip flops and sandals and in my case the need for a major foot pamper session. It isn't a particularly glamourous process but it makes a world of difference.

The Selfridges Summer Beauty Box

Just look at this beauty! I mean, who doesn't like a box of goodies? A pamper hamper if you will! I picked up this beautiful Selfridges Summer Beauty Box the day it went on sale in May. Unfortunately, it was bought as a present for my sister for her birthday mid-June and so I haven't been able to post a blog about it until now. I am not sure if they are still available to buy as it may have sold out and I apologise for teasing you with these temptress treats if it has.

Lets start with the price. This sensational summer collection is just £25 (plus almost £5 in delivery)! Which I think is a bit of a bargain. Obviously they are not full sized products, just minis, but you still get a lot of product for the price and in total the contents are apparentlty worth £70!

Getting Summer Ready For Fair Skin - Tanning

When your legs are as pastey and white as mine a lot of preparation is needed before you can present your pins to the world. I like being pale and am never too bothered about tanning, partly because I think pale skin can look fresh and youthful and partly because I can't actually tan. I am either casper white or tomato red so I slap on the factor 30 as soon as the sun pops out, even a 50 if I am abroad.

Although I don't mind being fair skinned my legs can look a little scary because they so rarely see daylight and a little fake tanning is a necessity. Proper fake tan products do not work well on my pale skin and just look really orange, not a look I would like to go for! Even if I am from Essex! Instead I like to use a gradual tanner moisturiser as it allows me the control to build up the colour slowly and moisturise at the same time.

The Quest For The Perfect Eyebrow Product

I hate my eyebrows! They are long, gappy, an awkward colour and very high-maintenance. I am currently using the Maybelline Master Shape Eyebrow Pencil in Soft Brown to tame them on a daily basis which I like because of it's waxy texture but the colour is a little too red toned for me so I decided to go on a quest for a new eyebrow product.

There is so much choice when it comes to eyebrow products...pencils, pens, powders, gels.... so I wanted to buy a few options and compare. The only problem is that I am a little broke at the moment. I have recently discovered the Fragrance Direct website and they had a few cheap options so I decided to do a mini haul.

Bioderma Micelle Solution

I honestly did not want to like this product. I wanted it to be one of those products that was really hyped up but wasn't actually that great and that I could quite happily live without. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case...

I have very sensitive skin which has been a complete nightmare for around the last four months. I have always had a few blemishes but recently it has been a lot worse and it has really been getting me down.

Ciaté Caviar Manicure Set - Marie Claire Magazine Freebie!

I'll be honest, I don't usually read Marie Claire magazine, evident by the fact that I kept accidentally calling it the Marie Curie magazine to the hubby (now that would be an interesting read). I picked up this month's magazine purely for the freebie, this cute little Ciaté Caviar Manicure Set.

The Never-Ending Wish List...

It is no secret that retail work pays diddly-squat! 9 days in to the month and I have already spent my entire monthly beauty budget, which really wasn't that much to begin with. Rubbish. So instead I have a habit of making wish lists of products I can buy in future, a future that sometimes feels very far away!

Here's what is currently on my wish list...

Clinique Redness Solutions - Instant Relief Pressed Powder

I have pretty dry skin and usually don't reach for a powder when doing my makeup but with the weather warming up a bit of shine control can often be in order. Powders are also a great way to help set your makeup and keep it in place all day.

No.7 Ballerina Beauty Blush Palette

I have been a little obsessed with cream blushers at the moment. I went from no blusher at all to cream blushers pretty much straight away and seemed to skip over powder formulations.

Mirror Mirror On The Wall...

If Snow White's evil step-mother had a mirror anything like my magnifying one I am really not surprised that she was so bitter. Okay, trying to off your step-daughter was a bit extreme but I can see why she may have been a little upset.

Why do we do it to ourselves? I spend around 20 minutes a day ( least!) staring at every imperfection on my face magnified by 5! (This is whilst I am doing my makeup, I'm not just sitting there for 20 minutes staring at myself for no reason, that would be weird). I honestly am starting to think that this mirror is bad for me.

The London Beauty Day Trip

I only live about a 45 minute train ride away from London but hardly ever venture in to the big city, mainly due to the cost of a travelcard nowadays plus any activities you do for the day, but I can also feel a little overwhelmed by crowds sometimes. I'll just admit it, I am a small town girl at heart.

But, as soon as I saw Vivianna's London's Beauty Landmarks post I knew it was time to pack up my camera and my young persons railcard for a day of shopping, with beautiful beauty products as my inevitable reward.
