The Wedding Look Part Two - Hair

Not only was my sister a massive help with my wedding makeup, she was also my saviour when it came to the hair style! I did have a hair trial as well as a makeup trial with a professional and to be honest I did like the hair style she did, it wasn't perfect but it looked nice. The only problem was that I felt like I couldn't move my head in case it all fell out which it inevitably did about half an hour later. Not great when you need it to stay in all day and evening!

My sister has always been good at doing hair and spent about an hour curling the hair of half my friends on my hen-do before our cocktail making lesson. She offered to try doing my hair for the wedding and I knew I would be in good hands. Being my sister it also meant I could be honest and tell her if I didn't like it.

The Wedding Look Part One - Makeup

My blog is officially 1 month old today so I thought the best way to celebrate would be to do a post on my complete wedding look! I will divide it in to two parts, one for my makeup and one for my hair.

The reason I started this blog was because I realised that to get my wedding makeup exactly the way I wanted it, I would have to do it myself (with a lot of help from my sister). I wanted to share my experiences of trying to find the best makeup for the best prices, figure out what was worth spending the money on and pretty much just celebrate and express my new beauty addiction.

I tested a lot of products before the wedding to get exactly what I wanted, which was a fresh youthful English Rose look, and this is the makeup that I decided on...

MAC Lustre Lipstick - Patisserie

It is a sad fact that at 25 years old this is my first MAC Lipstick. I didn't realise what I was missing out on! With £15 left on my Debenhams voucher and after reading blog after blog on MAC's must-have products I knew I had to bite the bullet (excuse the pun) and make the purchase. I am not much of a lipstick wearer but I am slowly building up my collection and getting in the habit of adding a little colour to my pout on a daily basis.

The Perfect Emergency Handbag Makeup Kit

If you have a handbag as big as mine or as full of rubbish as mine is you will understand that it is important to keep the contents down to the essentials and as compact as possible. It's finding the balance between what you need, what you might need and what won't break your back.

My bag already holds my purse, phone, notebook, kindle fire, umbrella, keys, a book and a load of random bits I probably don't need, such as some disposable hand-warmers left over from winter (my saviours this year!), a Thomas Cook travel sickness bag that I stole from a plane a couple of years a go (I don't know why either), hand wipes, body wipes, painkillers...I'm basically ready for whatever life throws at me.

An Everyday Eyeshadow Look

Since my 'What's in my makeup bag' post I have realised that I really haven't changed my everyday makeup look in a long time. Apart from the addition of blusher it has pretty much stayed foundation, concealer, mascara, a winged liquid liner and some lip balm.

This is a very simple look which has always worked for me but I thought it was time to mix it up a little and thought I would start with the eyes. I really enjoyed experimenting with eyeshadows for the wedding but I thought eyeshadow and liquid liner together could look a little OTT and I decided to try a much softer look instead. So for the first time in a long time I put down the liquid liner and took out an eyeshadow palette to get ready for work.

Cream Blushers

For some reason, when I first started wearing blusher, I immediately gravitated towards a creamy texture as opposed to a powder texture. It is a little trickier to work with but when applied correctly it gives a more natural, fresh and youthful look.

I would like to try more powder formulations however and currently have my eye on a couple of Nars blushers, but in the meantime here is the run down of my top three cream blushers at the moment...

Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Pale Pink

When I recently received a Debenhams gift voucher I knew immediately that this would be my first purchase. I have always loved the idea of these pot rouges and that they can be used on cheeks and lips. They are a perfect addition to your handbag to transform your look in a matter of minutes.

Fragrances Part Two - The Budget Buy

Part One of my fragrances post explored my history with perfume, to cut a long story short I used the same perfume, Hugo Deep Red, for almost ten years and decided it was time to expand my collection and give myself a bit of choice each morning. The brand I then fell in love with was Ghost and have now tried three of their perfumes, with two of them still in my collection. You can read all about it here.

Part Two however, will cover my budget fragrance find (and if you thought the Ghost perfumes were reasonably priced you are in for a shocker!). And so without further adieu the brand that has completely blown me away is....NEXT. Who would have thought it?! I like their clothes and shoes and am in love with their homewares but who would of thought of shopping for perfume there?!

Fragrances Part One

I have never been one to have a large collection of perfumes. I have only ever had one on the go, sometimes two if I was lucky and they would always be my favourites, ones that I had worn for years. Until recently that is. Now I am slowly building up quite a collection and it's nice to have some choice every morning.

Hugo Deep Red has been my perfume for as long as I can remember, maybe since I was about 16 (with a couple of others along the way - Gucci Rush 2 and Black XS by Paco Rabanne). Wow that's almost 10 years, what the...? It's a floral fragrance with notes of ginger leaves, freesia, hibiscus, blackcurrant, pear, tangerine, blood orange, vanilla, musk and more. It's the perfume I wore when I was at school and first met my husband and he has always loved it. Because he loved it so much I stopped using it about a year before our wedding as I wanted a bit of a change and I thought it would be nice to save it until the wedding day to wear again.

The Urban Decay Naked Palette - Wedding Eyeshadows

By far the most expensive makeup item I bought for my wedding makeup bag was the Urban Decay Naked Palette, and at £36 (Debenhams) I didn't take the decision lightly. There was a lot (and I mean a lot) of uuming and aahing over this one, my poor fiance!

As I am not a regular eyeshadow wearer I was having a lot of trouble deciding what sort of eyeshadows to wear on my wedding day but knew I wanted to stick with neutral colours. Just google netural eyeshadow palette and see how many results mention the Urban Decay Naked Palette! With hundreds, possibly thousands of reviews the product has undoubtedly reached cult status and it seemed unlikely that that many people could be wrong about a product. My decision was made.

Once I had decided that I would be doing my own wedding makeup I knew that I may have to splash out on some slightly expensive items to achieve the same finish as a professional makeover.

Dainty Doll by Nicola Roberts

I have a very pale complexion which makes finding foundations, blushers and lipsticks that match and complement my skin tone a real pain in the behind. When I decide to try a new foundation I pretty much just go for the palest shade they stock and hope for the best. Which even then is often too orange. I know I am from Essex but I would preferably like to avoid the TOWIE look.

My skin is pale with a pink undertone and it never ever tans, just burns very easily. There are many girls of the fairer complexion who have exactly the same problem and what we needed was a makeup range made by someone who understands. And that's where Nicola Roberts of Girls Aloud fame came to our rescue with her very own makeup range 'Dainty Doll'.

According to the Dainty Doll website... Dainty Doll is developed especially to enhance the beauty of fairer skin tones. Created using the finest quality, skin-loving formulas to help cover, perfect and care for your skin, The Dainty Doll range makes it much easier for those with paler skin tones to achieve the ideal shade every time.

What's in my makeup bag?...

My daily makeup routine doesn't change very often. A lot of the products that I use daily are products that I have been using for months if not years. These are slowly changing however as I get more interested in makeup and try new things.

For an 'everyday face' or a 'work face' I like to keep it pretty basic, mainly foundation, concealer, mascara, eyeliner and blusher. If I am having a particularly bad skin day sometimes I like to make a bit more of an effort and add a primer or some lipstick to make myself feel a little better.

I have noticed that the more I have been reading about and experimenting with makeup, the earlier I have had to get up in the morning to allow myself enough time to get ready! I won't tell you how long it takes me (shameful!), but doing my makeup is actually something I really enjoy doing everyday. It's almost therapeutic and I just switch off whilst I am concentrating on perfecting my everyday winged liner or buffing in my foundation.

My Wedding Skincare Nightmare...

Every bride wants to be beautiful. And who can blame them? It's supposed to be the best day of your life, the day you get to marry the one person you love the most in the world in front of all your friends and family. I think there is actually quite a bit of pressure on women to look their best on their wedding day and this is bound to cause some stress and emotional outbursts in the run up to the big day.

One of my biggest concerns and insecurities was my skin. I am prone to breakouts which come and go but for the 3 months in the lead up to the wedding it was awful. Just awful. My skin hated me. I don't know if this was due to stress or hormones or bad skincare treatments but I just couldn't figure out what to do about it.

I think stress had a lot to do with it, stress gives you spots and then you get more stressed because of the spots as Vanessa Hudgeons used to say on the Neutrogena adverts or something along those lines any way.

A Budget Friendly MUA Haul...

The brand MUA came to my attention quite recently and seemed ideal for those on a budget. With lipsticks from £1 and eye shadow palettes for £4 I thought it was worth a try.

I can't quite remember how I came across the brand but I remember I some how ended up on their Facebook page the day they reached 50,000 likes. Apparently they had made a promise to their followers that they would have a 50% off sale when they reached this particular milestone and so they were frequently posting updates about the upcoming sale, including warnings that followers must be patient and not all flood to the website at once or it would crash. I'm not sure exactly how they expected 50,000 followers would discuss appropriate times to visit the website and agree who should shop when and who should wait etc.

Feelin' Dandy - An introduction to all things blush!

Until this year I had never used a blusher. I know, crazy right?! I am very pale and also have a very pink undertone to my face, something which I have always hated and if given the chance would get rid of (the pigmentation not the pale complexion). It therefore, never occurred to me to embrace the flush of colour and instead of trying to hide it completely I should have concentrated on highlighting it in the right places.

Unfortunately, the natural rosey colour is not only concentrated to the apples of my cheeks but instead it seems to travel all the way down to the jaw line. This becomes particularly obvious when I am caught in an embarrassing situation, which due to my clumsiness is a rather frequent occurrence!

It was only after my wedding make-up trial artist put a little blusher on my cheeks that I realised I could perhaps make it work for me (pretty much the only thing I liked about that trial!). And since I had deprived myself for so long of the beautiful pinks, reds and corals that can be brushed, buffed, smeared and blended across the cheeks, I have now gone a little OTT to say the least!
